I think this is worth sharing. So many of us as new nurses went through this and now I see those same nurses continuing this crazy trend. Hopefully this will inspire somebody to stand up to the bullying in nursing.
Nurses Eat Their Young; Warrior Nurses Put a Stop to It August 31, 2011 3:59 PM by Pat Veitenthal Share I just got another one of those phone calls that aggravates the Warrior Nurse in me to no end. It was from a colleague telling me about her experience at her new job. She's a Warrior Nurse, so she's not having any trouble establishing herself, but she told me about a youngling who is being tormented by some of her new co-workers. I swear to you, I do not, nor will I EVER understand this "eating our young" trait that nursing is, unfortunately, so well known for among insiders. My friend and I share a similar philosophy about this. As Warrior Nurses, we take it upon ourselves to protect these younglings, or ANY underdog type that is being bullied. And that's what this is, gang, plain and simple bullying. My friend watched briefly as a group of RNs sat around criticizing the youngling for struggling with her assignment. My friend finally said, "Then get up off your butts and HELP her. That's what I'm going to do, because she may be MY nurse someday." And THAT is the correct way to address the situation. I want new nurses to know everything I know. I want them to be better nurses then we were. I want the very best nurse caring for me and my family, so I will share everything I know with them. Stop being critical and share your knowledge. Help the strugglers get better at the job. They will become a more valuable team member to you, and may bail YOU out someday. That's what a Warrior Nurse does. posted by Pat Veitenthal
